Don't shop what you can't find in a place where they sell that stuff you like the look of but always looks weak when you get it home. Only shop the things you find there. It'll look better the more of it you get. It'll look eclectic. You'll develop taste and character. People'll gonna look at your collection and see movement and symmetry and decision where there was nothing but regret cos it looked weak when you first brung it home. They'll wanna shop in a place like yours but they shouldn't. They should only shop what they can find in a place where it sells that stuff that they like the look of but always looks weak when they git it home.

What's new? Here's the story:

1. I'm hooked on DEM HUNGER's projects, and there seem to be many of them, all scarcely promoted - intentionally weak metadata. This goes subcutaneous. He's got a language of paint and bodily fluids working out, viscera, pond foam and scum, gender identity lost in hacked up b&w photos of chossy rubble, and all bundled up in toddler-sodden oily rags of abuse. Don't contemplate it, just let it corrode you. Check Leaving Records for some Dem Hunger / Durlin Lurt tapes and releases. Also look up his/her Sandra stuff. This tumblr hooks you up with regular mediafire sounds, and the twitter keeps your mind on the filth. It's Ghedalia Tzartes with colour synesthesia, tourette's syndrome, and diesel fumes.

2. Hooked on the new Dalglish release on Highpoint Lowlife - Benacah Drann Deachd. The label's coming to a close, but this is a renewed, restrengthened output for an artist whose been bubbling away at brewing a distinct sound in the murky world of glimmering glitches and gently resistant undertowed drone. There's a completely cohesive structure to everything that goes on in here - you remember those Asa-Chang and Jun Ray releases on the Leaf Label, laying out their precession and procession by tightly constrained mathematical rules of proportion? But here the way of going isn't so self-consciously Up Front - it has a closer parallel, perhaps, to the dj's craft, shifting the tension and the release by aligning and misaligning the dropouts on distinct compositions while playing them simultaneously. [That's what good djs do, at least.] Get immersed.

3. You're already hooked on em, but so am I: Sonic Router's awesome podcasts on the Bleep podcast. Obviously it's tough for anyone who doesn't have super-extended time to keep up with everything that SR links up to - you need 56 hours in a day just to get part of the drift of the world of fantastic music that SR seems to have a hotline direct into. So these are fragmentary snippets of the bigger SR picture, the condensation of each year's week of that world, keepin it bass, friendly, booty and tuff. All good, all the time - a force not to attempt to reckon, the human mind is mostly finite.

Let's not be hasty.

What does it mean to change your mind? No judgement in brainstorm sunchina, so just put it out there - let the questions' roles work their maybes. A pitch: to change your mind, do you have had to have had one made up? Is mind-changing indicative of (or even presupposed by) once-having-decision-making done? Alternatively, on the other hand, moresoever: perhaps, or perhaps not, change-minding falls afoul of a rational problem - from where do we think as we move the mind? An old problem, and unfixed.

Two perspectives on a changing mind:

(i) it encourages nostalgie, since the old ways (from which we have certainly deviated) are reevaluated in a new light; things weren't so bad, why did we stray so far, can alt-retro ever (re)capture the authentic elderly? Apologia, revisionism, reversion.

(ii) it opposes nostalgia (except, perhaps, nostalgie de la boue): we are here to move away from the present old ways, they are broke, we misunderstand current practice - we think it is rich but it is ~~bankrupt~~ not. Iconoclasm, revolution, revision.

There is work here to be done, but only gnomically. Gnome on, again.

News 1: Sad to hear that Highpoint Lowlife, the esteemed London-based label that's been putting out top quality electronic music for the past n years, have decided to call it a day. HPLL's head honcho Thor is dedicating his multi-tasked time to working on graphic novelism, check his styles here. As a coda there's a slew of new releases, including some wax! Yep, the new LP from Roof Light is getting a selected-tracks 12" treatment (check the audio below and all, there's some Roof Light snuck in there). Another top-notch recent release has been Mandelbrot's latest on HPLL, called Effect-Release, which is a collection of treated-guitar drones - it's very much rx3 listening territory: while listening close to the manipulation of the source material, you imagine you can work out how it's been achieved, until you realise how much more was going on that you weren't attentive to. Rich, mellifluous, entrancing and not a little uplifting - beautiful stuff. Shop it up now.

News 2: Another rx3-fav-label bursts further upon the scene: Pictures music's website also collects photos and things. I've featured some stuff from Dark Sky on here before, but I've just been checking new signing Koreless's stuff on his soundcloud, it's feeling good. Go click. News 3: Dutty Artz have released a new LP from Matt Shadetek - 'Flowers' picks up a slightly melancholy emotional overtone and sets it in within a UK-influenced bass-driven dancefloor style. It's got strings playing game-tune melodies over bassline beats that drop like Dexplicit, as well as grime riffs, whips cracking over synth glissandi, that are begging to be vocalled. Check the freebies on the Dutty Artz page and then go Pick It Up.

News 4: New LP forthcoming from Lukid on Werk Discs titled 'Chord' - this one's gonna get a heavy 3x12" vinyl pressing, which is properly exciting. You've got to get a listen to the track / look at the video for 'Hair of the Dog', which started circulating at the end of February. Big styles.

News 5: TVO / The Village Orchestra's Ruaridh Law has set up a new label broken20 alongside collaborators / co-conspirators Production Unit and Erstlaub, so it's gonna be quite the triumvirate Scottish powerhouse. They say:

Rather than be genre-tied, we will be releasing music rooted in a particular aesthetic – releases concerned with decay, erosion, entropy, mistakes and errors, line noise and tape hiss, hum and buzz.

Couldn't be more exciting: errors? mistakes? Now That's What I Call Music. The label's release schedule (which is also gonna include bits from all three artists) is anticipated by free releases under the label moniker 'brokenZero', available here. Snag all three and then point your .rss feedreadster t'ward the broken20 podcast, part one of which comes from Erstlaub and sets one part of the tone for the label's outlook: "‘On Becoming Invisible’ is a 70 minute exploration of drone, dark-ambient and post rock".

Other: a little mix of recent big listening: been diggin Raffertie's work a LOT; still addicted to everything to do with the Infrasonics label and particularly feeling the new 12" splitting Jamie Grind with Gon; Actress' Splazsh LP on Honest Jons is clearly album of the year. One song into another and then into the next. 29mins, 8 individual pieces, long enough to apply for a job, diverse enough to feel experienced.

In other news, I'm hoping to reach the People's Republic of South Yorx for the next in a series of hott hott shows lined up at Rough Disko. On the 5th Feb they've got Hessle Audio's Ben UFO showin up to flex some dancefloor. I've been continually impressed by his sound and versatility, his show on subFM had me locked regularly, rolling from his intimate knowledge of off-centre-swung hiphop to some of the most precision-tooled du_ste_ flavours around, the kind that he's been puttin out on Hessle. Support from Swansea's Doc Daneeka, rollin out that funky sound. Sheffield Harley, free before 11, only £3 after (how do they do it?).

Highpoint Lowlife finished 09 on a high (having sustained one throughout), releasing 10-20's second part in a series of 'landform' EPs, this one titled 'Lake', a follow up to 'Island', and to be completed by 'Mountain' and 'Isthmus'. I'm a massive fan of this sound; it properly connects several key themes in rx3 listening habits: itchy electronic manipulation, most properly the preserve of the idm machine but liberated by deft application of ambient, found and acoustic sounds; drawn out, slowly arching crescendi, located on the strip of deep listening that links the habitat of the drone aficionado to the haunts of the techno habitué; a sensitive understanding of the associations between poly/microrhythms and rhythmic separation across the frequencies - beat is supplicant to vision, a composite of independently meaningful parts.
Nightshifters gave away a killer dancefloor EP 'Vampire Killer' back around halloween by dj P.O.L. Style, and have just followed it up with NS011 'Valhallah' by Hostage. Bootdown solid sounds. Been saying it for a while - Nightshifters are a team worth following. They've got a peculiarly heavy and raw approach to this bmore fidget house scene that takes them to an altogether more bass-driven skull-shaking place. Must be in the pedigree of the parties. Pushin it hard.
Matt Shadetek and DJ/rupture release 'Solar Life Raft' on theagriculture - a mix LP including lotsa exclusives, followed up by a 'singles' version release where you can get hold of the source material. It's a mature sound. Shadetek's post-grime productions have long since demonstrated his nuanced ability to hit delicate notes without lapsing to the sentimental, and the clarity of his sound shows the results of his long-time commitment to the studio arts. Meanwhile /rupture has been making progressive moves away from the early bombast of ragga-jungle, and while his Nettle project continues to explore enervative modes of innovative non-western musical ideas, his role as standard bearer for sharing Mexican and South American cumbias suggests a more developed understanding of the sensual elements of sound; the hypnotic sway and pitch, ululation and diaphanous layers that can still build for a diaphoretic dancefloor. Solar Life Raft combines each artists recent developments - it brings together two sets of ears acutely tuned for subtleties of expression.
Chris Watson compiles the sounds of water - rain, waves, glaciers, drips - for bbc radio4. Super deep. Coped to tape, slowed it down, got that deep bass cave boom.

About a month ago I got wasted at the warp20 celebrations in Magna, Sheffield (actually Rotherham), and played music along with Juliun c90 to an often deserted v.i.p. bar - everyone was down in the main room rockin out to Squarepusher spanking his jazz bass, followed by some big sets from big warp acts. Forgemasters were immense - raw bleep vibes, with beats sounding fresher than a lot of styles since.

Big shouts to Matt REAL BAD, bringin his upbeat touch to the whole of the weekend's proceedings. Get yerself subscribed to Real Bad, he's right where the action is, a man with all the buttons. Big love to Tom c90 for being the daddy and gettin us all to it and through it an'all.

Anyhoo, here's a half-hour bit of what I played. I can't hype John Cohen enough - his sound is jaw-dropping on a big system, and opens and closes this mix with stunning style. You'll hear more of this guy, 4 shore.

I look at k-punk's blog whenever I wonder what music theory looks like. He makes judicious use of comic book images, but I never wondered what he looked like.

Hot new release on NightShifters from Rampage - the 'War!' EP is out now, and a free high-quality mp3 of 'Lovin U Is Easy' is available for download right here. It's definitely signature stuff for the label, collecting dancefloor hooks and rolling them out together, ranging from soft Goldie-era synth pads to b'more breaks and handclaps, from straight tube-bass spasms to house-flava tone-chimes on the downbeat of the bar. Freshness!

Infrasonics 12001EP split 12" with Ike Release on one side and Hot City on the other. Some playfully inventive dancefloor workouts here. Both sides reach deep bass frequencies and short out with crackling summer lightning on the top end. 'Misdeeds' from Hot City has a darker rave-stab vibe with a 2-step, sitting on top of an-end-of-the-bar bass pounce, where 'Jenova' uses a hauntology delay to chart a link from this brand new 2-step to the more recent, skippier end of dubstep developments . The Ike Release side has its feet rooted in a dark Detroit/Berlin club, but isn't punishing. Where 'No More' starts off feeling like a Kanzleramt /proto-Tresor slice of techno, it's broken up by swift cuts to lighter sounds; snippets of house pianovocalpercussion, dredges of ravehoover, bit-reduced breakdowns. Similarly, 'Setting Me Free' evidences wider, cross-genre listening. At a more relaxed and bouncier lower tempo, it's able to roll out glitch house microsamples alongside some fun contemporary booty tricks - there's an ascending vocal snippet that's showing up in the post-b'more-breaks booty styles from AC-Slater, A1Bassline and the NightShifters label. Big Release! Go Grab It!

Erstlaub's new release on Moving Furniture Records is rockin me at the moment - it's an intense but not dense shifting haze, like someone choreographing smoke in an empty swimming pool. Here's what they say about 'Broadcasting On Ghost Frequencies':

Inspired by the Ganzfeld Procedure where the participant is deprived of visual stimulus and bombarded with white/pink noise drawing the mind to form patterns in the chaos often hearing voices from the past or inventing entirely new constructs within their consciousness, this release pays tribute to the parapsychological mind and its many wonders.

Not a million miles away (since Erstlaub shows up for this one, I think), I'm repeated listening to The Village Orchestra's new release on Highpoint Lowlife, entitled 'I Can Hear The Sirens Singing Again'. It's a recording of a live soundtrack to a Japanese manga that I haven't seen - there's a lot going on it, and it works as a collage from sound snippets contributed by several hpll related artists. While live-playthrough-OSTs often have lofty goals ('reimagining the film in a new medium' etc), TVO eloquently describes his humble ambitions and the haphazard process behind the eventual product. It's not deflationary, he just lets it be known that however much you might want to overthink this kind of work, his point was to make some sort of accompaniment that might be suitable. As more and more of these kind of live audio/screening crossovers seem to happen, it's becoming a respectable standalone medium, without any need for justification (or even an apologetic one). Get on to it.

Here's what's past. I passed out of radio land. The colour was trooped to a welter of noise (2hours of static), which passed through the airwaves without getting recorded, so there's no record. The parade's highest ranks was the passage of songs involving the letters A. R. and C. - just like teevo I'm going to replay it, and just like sesame street I'll bring you the letters A. R. and C. in the form of the numbers 1 and zero shortly.

I also wore the Gold, and I Petrocollapsed, in the very best of company.

So, first up, Rob!Run!Reach! #18 from April 28th. EXCLUSIVE mix from WeWearTheGold's masterful DJ DERRICK TIBBS. Right in the middle of this set I played a mix that he made exclusively for the show. The man's got a Midas touch on the turntables, and he's a top chief selecta, as you'll remember from his previous appearance on the show.

The show kicked off with some as-yet-unreleased off-centred-cam-shuffle hiphop, and worked itself through to an EXCLUSIVE Monkey Steak mashup - a collision of Natasja (RIP) and Enur's 'Bonfire Riddim' with N.B Funky's 'Riddimbox'. That clever edit anticipated Gabriel Heatwave's thoughtful think/listen-piece on how Jamaica is waking up to the sound of the UK Funky scene (more on that in #19). Episode #19 - the penultimate event. What's to be said? We started gentle and got up and about by the end. That 10-20 release on Highpoint Lowlife has got me gripped. The press release says he's a Devon resident, and I guess most of my crew associate that part of the world with Braindance and Rephlex. But this LP has electronics and organics, crackle and decay, slow autumnal places with leafmold, resonators and background hum. I'm hooked: it's a familiar sound even though I've not heard it before - traces that are personal but forgotten, like watching your dreams on someone else's television, reading your own words in print that you hadn't thought you'd gotten round to writing yet.

Another big exclusive from Hanuman, in the midst of a series of mixes including a free download from the above mentioned theheatwave.co.uk post, definitely worth a read/listen. Also in this show, a track by John Cohen on a great new free label called thisisopenmusic. Cohen's Brighton-based, that city of spiralling ideas (iTal Tek, also featured here, comes from the South Downs as well), and new to me, but has put together something epic and unrestrained. The LP is a mature and confident genre-crossing creation, and combines the best of Ben Frost's deliberate pace and tension with LFO/Mark Bell's intransigent ability to structure insistent beats. [The track on this show features a snippet of a Björk vocal, quite appropriately]. It's free, and I simply insist you download it now.

I caught up with David Bryne, numerous philosophers, all saaaf laaandan crew, the sheffield crowd (+2 since Monday - congrats to Derrick Tibbs on the twindom!), last-fm realness (shouts!@sideb0ard), the inside of the Wenlock, the tiptop of Brockwell park, Brixton market (me & GBalmeR got Wire-themed t-shirts made), the first and worst classes of UK trains and the dancefloor of WeWearTheGold. My headphones've been rockin his previous mix through every station in which I've been kicking heels, and he just got in touch with a new one. It's a killer mix, right where I'm feeling music coming from right now. There's freshness from L-Viz 1990 (Night Slugs represent!) - he's on fire right now, definitely stole the night at Fabric a couple of weeks ago, and his productions are on the mon€y! There's solidity c/o EARTH - hell yeah, EARTH in the mix! And there's a remix of a track I haven't previously heard by Leif - you might know Leif from his amazing remix of that Burial track (better than the original imho), but I've kinda slept and not kept up with his output. Finally, some Taliesin-original-production action - one to watch! Yes, go out and watch him - playin near you UK. Get at it!

I gotta host of other bits that I wanna send at y'all, but I'll keep store some up for the next Rob!Run!Reach! - right now the only other thing that should qualify as this-minute-essential-listening is Shadetek's incomprehensibly raw 'Carbomb' riddim, as versioned by no less a vocalist than 77Klash, coming out as 'Pressure' (download here, h/t Jace). Shadetek and 77Klash and JahDan Blakkamore, you'll remember, put out the punishing 'Brooklyn Anthem', and this one's got the same explosive power (pardon the pun). I first heard it at c90 back in 2005 with Jammer, Skepta and Chronik on the mic, but the 77Klash vocal takes the grime-riddim and flow and ramps it up so it comes out sounding more like a proper JA gun-lyric toast, rather than just a patois-inflected pastiche. BIG!

So yesh, two single updatables in one.

Furst up

Lightness and Darkness: We Wear The Gold went like a dash - properly quick, very upbeat. Nice crowd: pretty, smiling faces - f.f.fresh music, lotsa bounce! The only downside on the proceedings came the succeeding morning, when a constable hofficer of the law proceeded to the venue to inform said venue owners that there had been nasal consumption of class-A unmentionables at the event. A slander - for those not in the knows, we're a clean crowd - but from whence, and why?

Here's the outrage - it seems the SouthYorksPoliceConstabulary have a hotline camera installed above the dj booth (no doubt as some sort of venue-insurance / community-service / licencee blackmail scam), and that throughout the night an erstwhile bobby was employed to watch our medallion-wearing antics. A small, grainy and flickering b&w image of freshfaced youths bouncing in neon glow, stooped in focussed concentration over turntables, laptops, cdjs and record bags - yeah, I *guess* at a stretch you could imagine someone mistakenly thinking that they were banging out lines to hoover up, but it'd be a massive presumption. It seems that SYorks' finest won't release any footage - they just wanted the venue owners to know whatever it was that they figured that they'd learnt. So our loose party collective are faced with having to defend ourselves to the owners - "honest mate, we didn't, we wouldn't" etc. An unfounded accusation has been brought against us, and as a result we've gone down in the estimation of those with whom we were hoping to form a good relationship... Sux, freal.

I'm not at all sure about the legal grounds here - I certainly wasn't made aware that I was being broadcast live by a hotline to the fuzz, and I'm not sure whether the old bill are allowed to go around giving friendly-and-false tips that they've gleaned from the visual equivalent of gossip sourced by chinese whispers. Do the rozzers often share 'intelligence' with bar owners, and does it make any difference if they don't know that of which they speak? [Note: not just a failure of Knowledge, but also a failure of Justification: I think they'd be very hard pushed to argue that they have even prima facie warranted beliefs].

It's been non-stop chez Aberdeen an'all - Petrocollapse went OFF, and Rob!Run!Reach! on Aberdeen Student Radio reached a lot deeper than ever before as I was joined by Lovely Dave, who brought with him a stack of post-punk/ambient/pop rekkids, ready to bounce back'n'forth with me. Very much in Simon Reynold's territory, I figure. If I'd only let him play one song he would've gone for Wire's 'Eardrum Buzz', but as it was we got through a BIG lot. My favourite from what he brung has probably gotta be the Peter Gabriel track, but yeah, it was ALL good. Yo yo yo! It's completely true to say that things are GETTING HOT. F'rinstance - I just got me a hold of a bunch of BIG mixes that I'm feelin' powerfully good about. [Wayne&Wax has a post about the phenomena of blog mixes here - get down the list he's got there, see how many you've got in common. I reckon I'm about 65-70% with him on the dl for that period...].

One: THE HEATWAVE return with another (makin this annual?) roundup of dutty dancehall bashment vibes. They say rowdy, I say hold on a minute, there's at least 7minutes of worship music in the middle there. Rowdy evangelism p'raps? Maximum fiyah power on the rest of the load!

Two: KKINGDOMM gets a h.h.h.h.h.hot mix together for Lower End Spasm. Just grabbed this, feelin it SO much. The transatlantic connection betwixt Kingdom and Bok-Bok&Manara is a flourishing success, well worth cherishing. Get pon it.

Three: DUTTY ARTZ have a podcast, only 2 so far, so far as I'm gettin them, but they're both hotness. The latest, most recentest, is a blend by Lamin of hip-hop tracks with credit-crunch connections - some killllller tunes in there, includin a Kano piece that blows up! JahDan Blakkamore does sing/shouts over the top, and there are some cute'n'deep aphrorisms spoken out by toddlers. That's the way to role to the dole! 2million unemployed in the UK? So that's 2million with enough time to listen to all these lyrical bombs. Right enough.

Four: slept on this, but SOOT records got a new signing, El Hijo de la Cumbia, and while there's an e.p. on its way you can get prepared by hittin up the mix he made of his (&related) digital cumbia stuff here [direct link - shouts to whatsupbuenosaires who originally posted it - go read more there!]. 21minutes of hypnotic maracas and hip/waist/booty shakin rhythms. 2) Petrocollapse - that's the party a week on Thursday up here in Aberdeen. Helll yeah, we KNOW the oil systems can't continue to support this city, but while they're here we're making the most of all the visitors from oil-rich nations to get our dance on. While it'd be tempting to roll afrobeat all night, really flog the Nigerian connect (cheers to BP!), I'm gonna be pushing a globalish flavour.

3) And in preparation the next 2 shows of Rob!Run!Reach! on ASR are gonna be spent (10th - tonight! - and 17th) airing the kinda sets I'm preparin for Petrocollapse. FURTHERMORE the r.r.r.radio show on the 24th March is by no means a return to normal service - my man Lovely Dave from Bristol is heading up to Baredeen to dash in the studio and share his ENORMOUS knowledge of everything with us. OKkkk, so the thirteenth Rob!Run!Reach! aired on Tuesday. I know what you're thinking - how long does it take to boil potatoes? And that was a heavy round of dubstep-related sounds, nice to flex those bitsa wax occasionally, don't think I could manage more than a half-hour of half-step these days mind you. Hell yeah, two posts in as many hours. Catchin up on the backlog, stockin yer audio pantries ready for the cruel, quiet weeks ahead. I'm going to link a load of mixes, for two reasons:

They're all amazing
You're probably going to spend quite a lot of time either a) on trains, buses, planes etc, or b) having to 'do' stuff, like cook and eat and talk to elderly people, so you don't really want to have to make a conscious effort to pick out music for yourself. You'd rather just press play on an hour long thing and go with it.

NIGHTSHIFTERS! Hell yeah, mentioned them a couple of weeks ago. They've got their first proper big release - HOSTAGE's "Shake It" EP. They've got a free download to one of the tracks, so here's a direct link to Hostage-The Slave.mp3 - starts off like a bassheavy bmoresque piece of club action, but then the serious rave stabs kick in. The whole EP should go on your list of things to buy once you've cashed that xmas cheque from Grandma.
Ok, so that wasn't a mix, spotted it huh. But also c/o NIGHTSHIFTERS I downloaded this DJ Donna Summer 'NightMix', which he made for Dj Broadcast.nl earlier in November. Rx3's a longterm fan of the man behind ad&d, cockrockdisco, birthdaypartyberlin, not only for his solid commitment to party-harding, but also 'cos of this release, which still astounds. The NIGHTMIX is how you wish your new year party could sound, only your new year party's gonna be a limp affair, just like every year. Stay in, listen to this instead.
Yep, I played some Timeblind a coupla weeks ago (get the show here). I mentioned then that he had a counterpart to his essential Fauna mix - he's got loads of music up here and you should listen to it all without delay. Actually, delay a while, because first you should listen to his brand new FLORA mix. An angular selection of deep and slightly meditatively-flavoured dub-related sounds, I'm thinkin of lockin into this when the pain of public transport can't be diluted - a retreat to a somewhere in which concentration comes easily and is richly rewarded.
Grevious Angel posts a four-four selection, 4x4Hell, touching an energy that might constitute the roots-of-bassline, back before it new it could be a Niche of its own. The mix drifts to a territory that I'd have casually filed under post-Hype breakbeat instrumentals, and so I'm hitting rewind to the top. The vocal rubs are the money for me. As ever, John digs that bit deeper and goes that bit further.
Highpointlowlife's Sideboard and Moore got a new EP up for your consideration, 'A Garrison Of Two'. Interesting hauntology backstory to it - Arts Organisation Funds Musicians To Have Interesting Experience - don't tell the Daily Mail etc.
Ok, and finally, over at Rob!Run!Reach! we had ourselves a festive breakcore celebration show. I've been buying this stuff from rare&racy and dswat over the last 8 years, and although many feel like it's had its heyday (notable exception being the Bristol scene), I still love it for its (occasionally mindless) ability to make me feel Big and Powerful.. Haah, only kidding. Nope, it's all about absolution in the rave. Legitimation by elimination. So the final thing for you to download is just below. "I've got that one in the bag mate!" is something you hear less&less. We don't expect djs to take requests if they're doing something interesting - we're there to see what they reach for, so we don't ask. Or it's an 'event' (office party, website launch, whatever), the dj's doing nothing interesting, but he's got a system that's rigged to an archive of 15 gigabytes of nearly everything uninteresting ever, so we don't ask. Rich c90 had a memorable one playin a clubnight, straight up dubstep, when a girl says "I love this stuff, but it's my birthday, have you got any Lily Allen?" Cue bassuvius erupting, cue birthday-crowd queue to the door. Happy returns love.

Recently, wordthecat posted a question about the value of constant newness in music - he posted something old and something new. Then, in response and in echo, muddup! posted a question about the value of music once scarcity isn't an issue. Blissblog writes in the thewiremagazine's end of year round-up about the harmful effects of too-much; in particular, there being too many reissues. There's too much out there, and even the old(er) stuff's being kept new. I got some thoughts kreeping up on me, they take a while to reveal themselves, let's move on, we can come back to it. Plenty of time, nothing disappears.

So, to the Rob! Run! Reach! Radioshow from 2 weeks ago - late on getting this up, apologies to the faithful. Just to recap, so you remember what happened:

Besieged by technical difficulties this week. Whole lotta fun on the radio show (ASR for those not yet in the know) - shouts from all over the place, and equipment that kept failing. No studio recording, sadly, but I put the tracks together in a quick traktor mix early this morning for those of y'all who like to keep tabs on what's good. So yeah, none of my dulcet tones lulling you to tears, but a whole loada fresh music. Special mentions go to wirewool on the Modeselektor tip, wordthecat on his incredible Sarkozy&Carla screenplays and the kid606 tip, and Benn Loxo du Tacu on the Faytinga tip - all a'them deserve further clicking. Defective Diction

Yo - so I'm back after a bit of radio silence. What's new? Two recordings below, one from the night that Obama stormed the White House (before the result was known), and one from last night. The radioshow tracklists are building up, and they're starting to suggest patterns, including the following interests:

i) blood-temperature, occasionally-stifling drone sounds

ii) awkward, angular, bass-driven, electronic club music

iii) a lickle bitta JA for spice

iv) snippets of words which don't fully reveal their sense/reference

I've known for a while that this is where I live. Welcome back.

Other news. Gutterbreakz directs attention to the fact that Ed DMX Krew is doing some podcasting. I've grabbed 'em both so far, definitely recommend a listen - he's got real deep love for dance music — I met Ed at a clunge event in Sheffield back in April last year (they've now got a party called sulpHate that's lookin hottttt), where he was playing with Richard H. Kirk, and he talked passionately and intelligently about electronic music for a long time. In fact, the show he played seemed to be much the smaller part of the overall experience, and he seemed somewhat more interested in the discussion than the performance... He's got an admirable disdain for those who overemphasise genre boundaries, and a similar disregard for those who put scenes before music... But having said that, he's also got a very direct and certain knowledge of what gets filed where and with whom. And all of this comes across as he narrates his own musical biography, in fact, yeah, his podcast quite a lot like listening to a really interesting audio-book about a particular way of discovering a love for dance music. He's also a bit of an autodidact, particularly wrt physics. Go click!

What else new? I went to see BokBok&Manara at HushHush in Aberdeen, and they threw down a tasty tasty tasty set of bassline/niche/ghettofunk flavours. Some dubstep anthems in there, and the Aberdeen massive roared at every one of 'em, but my money was on the bounce'n'flex more than the dread'n'stomp. Both had recently been in NY, spinning records with T&B, Jace's Mudd Up! show, and at a party with Kingdom. They commented on how NY just doesn't have the roots in 2-step that we've got over here in the UK, so I guess playing a set there has to guide the audience in to the dancefloor using different hooks - hip-hop-related praps, crunk vocals and wotnot?

On the radar:

Hell yeah, Duuurrrrtttyyyy Goooooodzzz in the ADBN. Nice. Down at Origin on Thursday 27th - that's next week. He's probably one of the hottest grime mcs around at the moment (also on the list: Dot Rotten, Trim, +Giggs? - not sure, still in two minds about Giggs...). JahDan Blakkamore from the dutty artz camp has just been doing some tracks with Goodz, lookin forward to seein what'll come of it.

Just a quick link thing: BBC Radio 3 has a new series of spoken essays featuring new 'next generation' thinkers - upcoming young academics who present work from their field. AND last night's essay was given by a friend, Zoe Drayson, from the University of Bristol, talking about the philosophy of mind, specifically the 'embodied mind' hypothesis. I was morose all summer, it wouldn't be banished. It snowed yesterday—I found it hard to conjure my morosity. I did reduce myself to near-tears twice this week. I will persevere at such reductions, lest I lose the ability to nearly-tear.

Tonight we're runnin the c90 thing in Sheffield: LAKUTI, ACTRESS and c90 djs. Bit late on mentioning it here, but hey, if it makes you go click links and learn more about these guys then the timing's not the thing.

LAKUTI is part of the süd electronic family outa London; along with partner in crime Portable, she hosts some legendary underground parties all over the capital. ACTRESS is the label boss of über-different werk discs - they strive to put out something sounding unlike the last release every time. They too run killer parties in the big Smoke. ACTRESS has a new LP coming out real soon, 'Hazyville', definitely one to be pickin up if you're up for some Detroit-inspired electronica.

Other news: I did a radio show this week, but the recording is, frankly, gash. It's got a big loud hum all over it. Shame, 'cos I played stuff that I thought y'all might wanna hear. But I did manage to dig out a full recording of last week's show (where I thought I only had 17mins of it down). So here's a mpfree of that:
