thingA and thingB

So yesh, two single updatables in one.

Furst up
Lightness and Darkness: We Wear The Gold went like a dash - properly quick, very upbeat. Nice crowd: pretty, smiling faces - f.f.fresh music, lotsa bounce! The only downside on the proceedings came the succeeding morning, when a constable hofficer of the law proceeded to the venue to inform said venue owners that there had been nasal consumption of class-A unmentionables at the event. A slander - for those not in the knows, we're a clean crowd - but from whence, and why?

Here's the outrage - it seems the SouthYorksPoliceConstabulary have a hotline camera installed above the dj booth (no doubt as some sort of venue-insurance / community-service / licencee blackmail scam), and that throughout the night an erstwhile bobby was employed to watch our medallion-wearing antics. A small, grainy and flickering b&w image of freshfaced youths bouncing in neon glow, stooped in focussed concentration over turntables, laptops, cdjs and record bags - yeah, I *guess* at a stretch you could imagine someone mistakenly thinking that they were banging out lines to hoover up, but it'd be a massive presumption. It seems that SYorks' finest won't release any footage - they just wanted the venue owners to know whatever it was that they figured that they'd learnt. So our loose party collective are faced with having to defend ourselves to the owners - "honest mate, we didn't, we wouldn't" etc. An unfounded accusation has been brought against us, and as a result we've gone down in the estimation of those with whom we were hoping to form a good relationship... Sux, freal.

I'm not at all sure about the legal grounds here - I certainly wasn't made aware that I was being broadcast live by a hotline to the fuzz, and I'm not sure whether the old bill are allowed to go around giving friendly-and-false tips that they've gleaned from the visual equivalent of gossip sourced by chinese whispers. Do the rozzers often share 'intelligence' with bar owners, and does it make any difference if they don't know that of which they speak? [Note: not just a failure of Knowledge, but also a failure of Justification: I think they'd be very hard pushed to argue that they have even prima facie warranted beliefs].

Part B
Lightness: Leafcutter John has launched a remix competition, via his blog, hosting files with highpointlowlife, which you should go and grab and reconstitute into something else. I'm gonna try and get on with it, hahaaa. In the meantime, headover, see what you learn.

Carry Tender Much Empty

Hahhha! It becomes us! Friday is nearly upon it. Bring Home The Gold! There's more hype than ever right now in the WWTG camp - (we've broken through the 200-emails-copied-to-all-threshold to get this thing launched RIGHT), feelin BIG. Hold tight all a'y'all stretchin those hamstrings to get down for this. Bring It.

It's been non-stop chez Aberdeen an'all - Petrocollapse went OFF, and Rob!Run!Reach! on Aberdeen Student Radio reached a lot deeper than ever before as I was joined by Lovely Dave, who brought with him a stack of post-punk/ambient/pop rekkids, ready to bounce back'n'forth with me. Very much in Simon Reynold's territory, I figure. If I'd only let him play one song he would've gone for Wire's 'Eardrum Buzz', but as it was we got through a BIG lot. My favourite from what he brung has probably gotta be the Peter Gabriel track, but yeah, it was ALL good. Hope you enjoy this somewhat oblique strategy at bigger listening - switch off your Constant Newness Itch Machine, you can listen to all of this like it was just released...

Challenge particularly gripped

Yo yo yo! It's completely true to say that things are GETTING HOT. F'rinstance - I just got me a hold of a bunch of BIG mixes that I'm feelin' powerfully good about. [Wayne&Wax has a post about the phenomena of blog mixes here - get down the list he's got there, see how many you've got in common. I reckon I'm about 65-70% with him on the dl for that period...].
One: THE HEATWAVE return with another (makin this annual?) roundup of dutty dancehall bashment vibes. They say rowdy, I say hold on a minute, there's at least 7minutes of worship music in the middle there. Rowdy evangelism p'raps? Maximum fiyah power on the rest of the load!

Two: KKINGDOMM gets a h.h.h.h.h.hot mix together for Lower End Spasm. Just grabbed this, feelin it SO much. The transatlantic connection betwixt Kingdom and Bok-Bok&Manara is a flourishing success, well worth cherishing. Get pon it.

Three: DUTTY ARTZ have a podcast, only 2 so far, so far as I'm gettin them, but they're both hotness. The latest, most recentest, is a blend by Lamin of hip-hop tracks with credit-crunch connections - some killllller tunes in there, includin a Kano piece that blows up! JahDan Blakkamore does sing/shouts over the top, and there are some cute'n'deep aphrorisms spoken out by toddlers. That's the way to role to the dole! 2million unemployed in the UK? So that's 2million with enough time to listen to all these lyrical bombs. Right enough.

Four: slept on this, but SOOT records got a new signing, El Hijo de la Cumbia, and while there's an e.p. on its way you can get prepared by hittin up the mix he made of his (&related) digital cumbia stuff here [direct link - shouts to whatsupbuenosaires who originally posted it - go read more there!].  21minutes of hypnotic maracas and hip/waist/booty shakin rhythms. It's on constant rewind at rx3 right here.
Also so you remember, We Wear The Gold kicks off next Friday in Sheffield, and there are a bunch of hot mixes up on the mescpay player and for download, hopin you be grabbin to get yourself all ready for the launch.

But yeah, big right now is TONIGHT's PetroCollapse party. By way of preparation for it, this week's Rob!Run!Reach! radioshow involved me playin a big load of the sounds that we'll be shakin to tonight (El Hijo de la Cumbia's right in there). So yeah, nearly 2hours of music sourced from around the world, mixed up live and posted right here below. I'm also linkin all the places from whence I sourced it in case you wanted to hear the unmixed versions. SPREAD the LOVE.

Find demonstrate fine

Machine eats audio, no recording from last week. HOWEVER, this week it'll work. So tomorrow's Rob!Run!Reach! is another opportunity to get to know the sounds I'm preppin for PETROCOLLAPSE, which is this Thursday. Broadly, loosely:
  • CUMBIA! (+ cumbia digital + cumbia rebajada +)
  • SOCA!
  • DUBSTEP with CRUNK vocals!
  • KUDURO!
  • DUTTY DUTTY DANCEHALL!
  • BAILE FUNK!
  • BASSLINE!
  • ¡GUARACHA y GUARACHERA y GUACHARACA!
  • BALKAN BEAT!
  • BELLYDANCE!

What was great about last Tuesday's show was that I played the BIG! new one from AC SLATER, out NOW on NIGHTSHIFTERS! Head there and grab what you can, then buy the e.p. AC SLATER's also now part of theTrouble&Bass family, there's stuff up on their pages (including a picture of my DuttyArtz emblazoned chest at the Fabric show - it got much much more messy as the morning emerged from the night - massive shouts toNIGHTSLUGS for holding down such a killer set, a throng of hands stabbing the air at half-past-early -  BIG!).

Change of venue for PETROCOLLAPSE - it's no longer at wherever it was gonna be (Fitzpatrick's) 'cos it shut down. We were all for pulling it until it transpired that SIN next door is available. Step a bit further, you'll reach us. Wear primary colours, paint yer face like a wrestler, shake a maraca like it's carnivale!

AND over at We Wear The Gold you'll notice there's another NEW mix up, this time from our esteemed Gag Reflex! Big bigness! HEEAVVVVVYYYYYYY HAVE IT ACTION>>>>>>>>>

And It All Came Each

Yo yo yo yo.

Two parties and a hellalotta radio -  that is the news...

1) We Wear The Gold - there are now free downloadable mixes available from We Wear The Gold's mayspage, one's by yours truly, flexing some bootaaaaaayyyyeeeee music. Get yourself to Sheffield on Fri 27th for this one, it's gonna be a) big, b) free. HAaaHAHAA!

2) Petrocollapse - that's the party a week on Thursday up here in Aberdeen. Helll yeah, we KNOW the oil systems can't continue to support this city, but while they're here we're making the most of all the visitors from oil-rich nations to get our dance on. While it'd be tempting to roll afrobeat all night, really flog the Nigerian connect (cheers to BP!), I'm gonna be pushing a globalish flavour.

3) And in preparation the next 2 shows of Rob!Run!Reach! on ASR are gonna be spent (10th - tonight! -  and 17th) airing the kinda sets I'm preparin for Petrocollapse. FURTHERMORE the r.r.r.radio show on the 24th March is by no means a return to normal service - my man Lovely Dave from Bristol is heading up to Baredeen to dash in the studio and share his ENORMOUS knowledge of everything with us. We're thinkin it'll be a post-punk, eno-ambient, eclectic beneath-the-pop-radar bag of richnesses. And after that you'll be ready to head to Shef for We Wear The Gold. Full circle. Have It.

We Ride Thing We

So yeah, like I keep saying, there's lotsa listenin to be got through. Coupla big shouts to be had righthererightnow as well:

A number 1DuttyArtz just got their man JahDan Blakkamore uppppppped here at xlr8r on the xlr8r podcast. This has COMPULSION written all through it like a sticka Blakkpool's finest. Matt Shadetek's densely-meshed green-stick fractured Brooklyn anthem gets reloaded under 3 different remixes, and all the while y'man JahDan (noble society) drops his heavy patois-inflected, Brooklyn-sensibility singjay style right on the money. Larj. Additional - an exclusive MttShdtk bassline rmx of THE defining cut off of JahDan's 'We Are Raiders' EP on dutty artz is over at recordlabel - killllaa quality. Have it. This one's gettin dropped right on the Aberdeen party crowd at the forthcomin' Petrocollapse Party (19th March). Plenty of time for y'man called JahDan over hear at rx3 - did some tour guiding last summer for him and dj/rupture after puttin them on at c90, genuinely astounded by his ability to direct pure energy into every event. Nothin negative about him, relevance and focus when it's needed, optimism and charity at every turn. And his music speaks himself clear, especially the closer to this set.

B number 2Taliesin from theAgriculture / DuttyArtz camps is touring out and about in the UK, so go catch the pashhhhhhhion in your locale - if he's near then get go get go. I linked up his mix a couple of posts ago, and yeah, here's some dates for MARCH, no doubt to be updated with more details on his mayspice. Rep the flavours, show the love!
1st MARCH09 London dates begin
2-6th MARCH09 Dublin/Ireland
9th MARCH09 Derby (s.yorks needs to be ON this)
23th MARCH09 Ruffnek Discotek Bristol (bristol reprezent!)
24th MARCH09 Glasgow
D number 4. BokBok and Manara just upped a h.h.h.h.h.h.h.h.h.hot.t.t.t.t.t.t.t.t new mix over at lowerendspasm, what they made for trash menagerie. Just in time for their forthcomin show (Friday) at Fabric with the T&B crowd - even if you ain't reachin it (and I'm travelling from the 'deen for this one), definitely get on the dl and get the flavour. Locale: Grimey House. I'm thinking it's more housey grime. Let me know.

Shouts to all and every!

Calling You The Cook Right Now

Yes yes yes yes. Back and affected! We've got a MASSIVE selection of tracks on this week's Rob!Run!Reach! on account of playin host to the awesome technics-juggling skills of Sheffield's DJ DERRICK TIBBS! He threw down a half-hour set of dancefloor essentials by way of introducing all of you listeners out there to the flavour of our new Sheffield night, WE WEAR THE GOLD:

WE WEAR THE GOLD is kickin itself into life on Fri 27th March at The Stockroom, Sheffield. Gonna be cheap or free to get in, maybe some drinks promotions, but hey, it's all about shakin yourself to the beeeeeat and losing all them inhibitions and dropping all that attitude. Hell, wear some crazy jewellery just 'cos you wanna. I'm packin my knuckles with some big old sovereigns, that's how we do.

Before and after Tibb's set I rolled out a BIG bunch of musics that I've harvested from tinterweb, and so if there's ANYTHING that catches your limited attentions then follow the french directions below to OWN IT for yourselves. SO MUCH good stuff!

Also want to reprezent a few other bits of free music. I'm off to catch the Trouble&Bass crew in LDN at the weekend, and they've put out a huge mix to hype the tour, grabbable here. Get on it [tracklists all over the internet, just google it]. AND you'll also see linked up below a free download album of digital hip-hop flavours called Bag of Nothingness - get on that too! Fresh!

Future weeks on the show: Rob Pollinate's gonna bring us a bit of his mixin styles, and I'm gonna do some live globalista workouts in preparation for a big party we're puttin on in Aberdeen in a couple of weeks. More on that to follow. Right now, click the download link below, get the show, get listening, and get clickin for all the free stuff I've linked up. I do it 'cuz I love you.
